Design Miami/ Basel

We are very much looking forward to exhibiting at this year’s Design Miami/ Basel 17-22 June.

Occurring alongside Art Basel, Design Miami has become one of the world’s premier venues for exhibiting, collecting and discussing high-end historic and contemporary design.  The fair brings together the most influential galleries, designers, curators, critics and collectors and each show balances exclusive commercial opportunities with a progressive, cultural program, featuring collaborations with designers and design institutions, lectures and panel discussions.

At Dansk Møbelkunst Gallery we look forward to exhibiting an exquisite selection of 20th Century Scandinavian design, focusing on one of Denmark’s finest furniture architects, Hans J. Wegner, whose centenary we celebrate this year.

We are showing a very fine example of Wegner’s swivel chair, designed in 1955 in close collaboration with a professor in physical medicine. The chair beautifully demonstrates that a healthy, ergonomically correct office chair does not have to imply aesthetic compromises, but can be full of textual and sculptural poetry. The present example is in teak and steel with natural leather and executed by cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen.

Another highlight is the V Desk in teak, oak and brass, designed in 1950. Wegner originally designed this table to accompany his most iconic piece, The Chair, and therefore gave it slightly angled, tapered legs to match. The V-shaped stretchers under the desk not only testify to Wegner’s sense of details, but also to the refined craftsmanship of cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen.

At Design Miami/ Basel we will show these rare Wegner pieces alongside works by architects and designers such as Poul Kjærholm, Alvar Aalto, Kaare Klint, Poul Henningsen, Fabricius & Kastholm and the Swedish textile artists, Marianne Richter and Barbro Nilsson.
