Poul Kjærholm

Pair of PK25 chairs

Designed in 1951

In 1951 Kjærholm was a student at The School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen under the guidance of Hans Wegner who taught there at the time. Wegner assigned his students a graduation project of furnishing the living room of a well known Danish architect. Kjærholm chose Halldor Gunnløgsson and designed an unusual chair he initially called the ‘Element’ chair.

Kjærholm’s idea was simple yet very complex. The frame of the chair was made from a single piece of steel which was then press bent into shape. The frame was then wound with halyard to form the seat and back.
