Ceramic artist Birger Kaipiainen (1915 – 1988) was a leading figure in the field of 20th century Nordic ceramics. His work is characterized by an extraordinary, colourful creativity that seems remarkably ahead of its time. Kaipiainen began his studies at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki at the age of 17. In 1937 he was offered a position in the art department of the Arabia factory where he spent the next fifty years, interrupted by four years in the 1950s where he worked for Rörstrand in Sweden.
